This past Christmas, my husband rescued a Yorkshire Terrier from a puppy mill. We named him Gus and he is oh so cute. He really is the perfect dog … friendly with kids, has a playful disposition, gets along with our cat, loves people and he just puts a smile on my face.
However, once it was time for us to start grooming him (brush his hair, clip his nails, brush his teeth, etc.), he turned into a six pound monster! At first, I reacted with tension, which made the event even more stressful. But after watching many episodes of the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel, I’ve learned it’s all about my approach. If I remain calm and assertive, it will help Gus feel at ease with what is taking place around him.
It got me to thinking about how many other events in life can be affected by how we approach them. Because there’s always going to be situations that we may not like, but how we choose to react to them could change the outcome.
This is even true in the business world. For example, if you have a PR crisis occurring in your company, it may be best to address it in the public eye to sustain your company’s reputation, rather than trying to hide it for fear of the media finding out. Another example could be using the current economic conditions as an opportunity to explore filling a gap within the market and advertising your brand differentiation.
